| SAMBA Mission Promote adventure and exercise in the form of cycling. Objectives: 1. Encourage a low-impact exercise, in the form of cycling, on a population full of sedentary lifestyle and motivate them into a healthy one. 2. Promote our very own tourist spots that are accessible to cycling. 3. Assist government programs in promoting sports and adventures. 4. Provide inspirations and support to our local cyclists who have potentials to make it big in the sport of cycling. 5. Promote camaraderie within the cycling community 6. Raise awareness on the importance of exercise in fighting disease. 7. Re-invigorate the population by organizing races and fun rides. 8. Re-discover the joy of cycling just like how we enjoyed learning cycling during our childhood days. Brief history of SAMBA: Cycling in Samar has existed for many years. The Island has produced numerous world-class cyclists like Paquito Rivas, the champion climber from Northern Samar and Catbalogan's pride, Domingo Villanueva, who was a Marlboro Tour Champion. Despite the popularity of the sport, Catbalogan's cyclists were still disorganized and misguided back then. There were no clubs for the cyclists to look up to, no leaders to guide them, and no mentors to nurture these strong pedal-pushers with potentials to become great athletes. Sometime in September 2003, six motivated and determined bike enthusiasts, who regularly meet in Buri Airport, came up with an idea to form a cycling group to enhance their camaraderie and resolved the cyclists' dilemma. The group met several times and finally decided to form SAMBA (Samar Adventure Mountain Biking Association). Initially, the club wasn't doing well. But with the persistence of three of the six founders, namely, Joni Bonifacio, Alvin Laohoo, and Baltazar Solarte, the club expanded into a well-organized organization. The club gained members locally as well as overseas. At present, Samba organizes bike races and funrides with the support of the local government, businesses, and private donors. Foreign organizers also were attracted by the enthusiasm of Samba riders. In return, these organizers invested their resources to the local sport and to the financially-struggling cyclists. One such organizer is from New Jersey. After successfully co-sponsoring a bike race last August 2005 during Catbalogan's fiesta celebration, this organizer will return and sponsor "Tour han Samar 07" which will cover 500-plus kilometers around the island. Events like this indicate how Samba is making progress on their quest to popularize the sport of cycling. Thanks to the pioneering members' commitment and dedication to the organization for making Samba strong as it is today.
